‘Depressed’ cop kills colleague, turns gun on self

A POLICEMAN on Monday night opened fired inside the Police Lines of Bulandshaher district, killing at least one of his colleagues and injuring several others. He later shot himself on the head with an INSAS rifle.

Constable Saurabh Tyagi (34), who was allegedly suffering from depression, was a 2005-batch constable from Muzzaffarnagar. He was posted in the counting (gadna) office inside the Police Lines.

On Monday, between 9 pm to 9.15 pm, he reportedly came out of his office and opened fire. As the policemen present there tried to hide, constables Manoj and Chandra Pal tried to stop Tyagi and were hit in the chest and stomach, respectively. Head constable Manveer Singh too sustained a bullet injury in his hand.

“Manoj died on the spot. Manveer and Chandra Pal have been referred to the Medical College in Meerut,” said Meerut Zone IG Sujit Pandey.
“He later went to the ground nearby and kept on firing in the air. No one went near him as he could have shot anyone. The last gunshot was heard around 9.30 pm when he killed himself,” said a policeman.

Following the incident, the IG and the DIG left for Bulandshahr. DGP Javed Ahmed is also taking stock of the situation. “He has been depressed for months. We are trying to find out what had happened that forced him to take such an extreme step,” Bulandshahr SSP Anees Ansari said.
