The International award, which is based on results exclusively from international students, saw NTU edge ahead of second place Swansea University and St Mary’s University Twickenham in third.

British comedian Jimmy Carr presented the awards and higher education representatives from across the UK attended the lavish ceremony in central London.

“We all just really enjoy working with international students, that is the thing that binds us all”

“We all just really enjoy working with international students, that is the thing that binds us all,” said Dave Bailey, international development director at Nottingham Trent University, when collecting the award.

“They make NTU a great place to study, great place to work, great place to play,” he said.

The award winners were decided from the reviews of 25,000 students, collected by the Whatuni.com arm of the Hotcourses Group.

A league table of 125 universities has also been created as a result of the student reviews, in ten different categories, including accommodation, job prospects and student union.

The data collected also reveals that overall universities with a higher proportion of international students (more than 20% of the student population) have outperformed those with a lower proportion for the second year in a row.

Harper Adams University, located in Shropshire, scooped the final award of the night: University of the Year, beating out last year’s winner, Loughborough University, who this year came in second.

“The Whatuni Student Choice Awards highlight the quality of education and experience that UK institutions have to offer,” said Stephanie Marshall, chief executive at Higher Education Academy, a national body championing teaching quality.

“But, the more the sector changes the more it will have to react and respond to student opinion.”
