While Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Rakshabandhan with school children, other political leaders were not far behind in celebrating this festival that promotes unity. Addressing the audience after laying the foundation stone for the new headquarters of the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), PM Modi spoke of how athlete Sakshi Malik had earned new respect for tricolour, this Raksha Bandhan, by winning a medal at the Rio Olympics 2016. Home Minister Rajnath Singh too celebrated Raksha Bandhan in New Delhi, where young students lined up to tie colourful rakhis on his wrist.
While Textiles Minister Smriti Irani celebrated Raksha Bandhan by tying rakhi to the soldiers deployed at the Siachen Base Camp, Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited jawans at Lumla in Tawang region to celebrate the occasion. On Wednesday, Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal too tied rakhis, a symbol of unity, popularised by Rabindranath Tagore during the Partition of Bengal in 1905, to BSF personnel near the Attari Border.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav followed suit by celebrating Raksha Bandhan with young girls and women who tied rakhi to the 43-year-old leader at his official residence in Lucknow. Breaking monotony, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav celebrated Raksha Bandhan by tying rakhi to a peepal tree at his home in Patna, news agency ANI reported.
The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) thought of celebrating Raksha Bandhan a bit differently. Addressing the practice of gifting something to ‘sisters’ on this day, RSRTC offered free rides to women in all its buses. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal too announced the same for Delhi this morning on Twitter. Tweeting his best wishes on Raksha Bandhan, Kejriwal also wrote: “On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, DTC offers free travel to all women today.”
